The Old Prussians were a Baltic people who never formed a unified nation
In short: Inhabiting the southeastern Baltic coast, the Old Prussians were a collection of independent tribes defined by their pagan traditions and fierce resistance to crusaders. Though they shared a language and culture, their lack of political unity ultimately led to their conquest and assimilation by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century.
The Old Prussians, a Baltic people, occupied the region between the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons. They were organized into small, family-oriented settlements called laūks, which were often centered on hill forts. Because these tribes never established a centralized political structure, they lacked a common national identity, identifying instead by regional names like the Sambians, Bartians, or Sudovians. This fragmentation proved fatal when facing the organized military campaigns of the 13th century.
Their society was deeply rooted in a form of polydoxy, where natural forces and phenomena were considered sacred. Priests, including the high-ranking Kriwe-Kriwajto, maintained spiritual connections to ancestors and sacred groves like Romove. While some scholars debate whether this was a sophisticated polytheism or a belief in pervasive spirits, the religious practices were distinct enough that they became a primary target for Christianization efforts beginning in the 10th century with Adalbert of Prague.
The path to their downfall was marked by centuries of conflict. Polish dukes, including Mieszko I and Bolesław IV, launched repeated, often unsuccessful, incursions throughout the 11th and 12th centuries. The tide turned when Konrad of Masovia invited the Teutonic Order to intervene. Following the 1230 Prussian Crusade, the Order established a monastic state. Despite major rebellions, such as the one in 1286, the conquest was effectively concluded by 1283, leading to the assimilation of the population and the eventual extinction of the Old Prussian language by the 18th century.
