The €60 million journey from Brazilian youth to Portuguese icon
In short: Otávio’s career is a masterclass in professional evolution. From overcoming weight issues in Brazil to becoming the most expensive signing in Saudi history, his path reflects a complex navigation of identity, club loyalty, and elite performance across three different nations.
Born in João Pessoa, Brazil, Otávio began his development at Internacional's academy at age 15. His early years were defined by physical hurdles; he later credited manager Dunga for helping him overcome significant weight problems during his time at the Estádio Beira-Rio. Despite these challenges, he broke into the first team as a teenager, making his Série A debut in July 2013 and representing Brazil at the under-20 level in 2014.
His move to Portugal in 2014 marked a pivotal shift in both club and nationality. Following the release of his federative rights by Internacional, he moved to FC Porto for no fee and played out a two-year loan spell at Vitória de Guimarães prior to establishing himself as a regular. His impact was immediate and sustained: he won three Primeira Liga titles, multiple domestic cups, and earned a spot in the league's Best XI during the 2019–20 campaign. This period also saw him secure Portuguese citizenship in March 2021.
The ultimate transition occurred on the international stage. After years of representing Brazil at the youth level, Otávio made his senior debut for Portugal in August 2021 against Qatar, notably scoring in that match. His market value skyrocketed accordingly; in August 2023, Al Nassr activated a €60 million release clause to secure him. This deal not only made him the most expensive player in the Saudi club's history but also Porto's highest-ever sale.
Today, his career continues as he moved to Al-Qadsiah in 2025 before joining Qatar Stars League side Al-Rayyan on loan in 2026. His trajectory illustrates the modern football landscape: a Brazilian talent refined by Portuguese tactics, culminating in a record-breaking move to the Middle East.
