The journeyman who conquered Europe before winning an NBA title
In short: Before becoming an NBA champion, P.J. Tucker built a legendary career across the globe. From dominating leagues in Israel and Germany to surviving broken teeth in the playoffs, his path to the summit was anything but a straight line through the draft.
While many NBA players follow a predictable trajectory, Anthony Leon "P.J." Tucker Jr. took a scenic route through international basketball. After a standout collegiate career at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors, Tucker's NBA journey began with the Toronto Raptors in 2006. However, his early years were marked by stints in the NBA Development League and a period of being waived by Toronto in 2007.
Tucker found immense success abroad, establishing himself as a premier talent in Europe. In the 2007–08 season, he led Hapoel Holon to the Israeli Premier League title, earning both League and Finals MVP honors. He continued this dominance in Germany, helping Brose Baskets Bamberg win the 2012 championship and earning Finals MVP. His international resume also includes significant time in Ukraine with BC Donetsk and stints in Italy and Russia.
Returning to the NBA, Tucker transformed into a highly valued defensive specialist. His resilience was famously displayed during the 2018 Houston Rockets playoff run, where he played through several cracked teeth and underwent three root canal procedures. This grit culminated in 2021 when, as a key contributor for the Milwaukee Bucks, he helped secure the franchise's first championship since 1971.
Beyond the court, Tucker is a renowned 'sneakerhead,' owning thousands of pairs of sneakers, including rare player editions. His career, spanning 15 seasons, concluded with his retirement announcement in May 2026, leaving behind a legacy of defensive excellence and global impact.
