How P.J. Washington transformed from a high school standout into a pivotal NBA contributor
In short: Born in Louisville and raised in Texas, P.J. Washington navigated a high-profile path through elite prep schools and the University of Kentucky. Since his record-breaking NBA debut, he has evolved from a lottery pick into a versatile forward, playing a crucial role in the Dallas Mavericks' 2024 championship run.
Paul Jamaine Washington Jr. was born on August 23, 1998, in Louisville, Kentucky. His athletic pedigree is rooted in his parents, who both played basketball at Middle Tennessee State. After moving through St. Louis and Chicago, his family settled in Frisco, Texas. Washington’s development accelerated at Findlay Prep in Nevada, where he played alongside future talents like Allonzo Trier and Derryck Thornton. By his senior year, he was a five-star recruit, averaging 19.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, earning selections to the Jordan Brand Classic and the McDonald's All-American Game.
Washington committed to the University of Kentucky in 2016. His collegiate tenure was marked by resilience; he played through a significant pinkie injury during his freshman season, which later required surgery. Despite declaring for the NBA draft after his freshman year, he opted to return to Kentucky for a second season. Following the 2019 NCAA tournament, he declared for the draft permanently. The Charlotte Hornets selected him 12th overall in 2019. He made an immediate impact, setting an NBA record for the most three-pointers in a debut game with seven, ultimately earning a spot on the 2019–20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
In February 2024, the Hornets traded Washington to the Dallas Mavericks. This move proved transformative for his career trajectory. He became a key figure in the Mavericks' 2024 postseason, delivering high-scoring performances and clutch plays, including a decisive free-throw sequence against the Oklahoma City Thunder that helped propel Dallas to the Western Conference Finals. Although the Mavericks fell to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, Washington’s contributions solidified his role within the team. In September 2025, he signed a four-year, $88.76 million extension, securing his place with the Mavericks through the 2029–30 season.
