In short: From 1925 to 1979, the Pahlavi dynasty reshaped Iran through rapid modernization, secularization, and military expansion. Yet, this era of economic growth and infrastructure development was marked by political repression, uneven wealth distribution, and foreign intervention, ultimately culminating in the 1979 Islamic Revolution that ended a 2,500-year-old monarchy.

The Pahlavi era began in 1925 when Reza Khan, a brigadier general who seized power in a 1921 coup, was proclaimed Shah. Inheriting a nation devastated by the First World War and foreign interference, Reza Shah established a centralized state. He implemented sweeping reforms, including secularizing institutions, expanding education, and building infrastructure. However, his refusal to expel German nationals during World War II led to an Anglo-Soviet invasion in 1941, forcing his abdication in favor of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s reign saw a complex struggle for control. After a constitutional crisis and the 1953 coup that ousted Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, the Shah consolidated power with Western support. He launched the White Revolution, a massive program of land reform and industrialization funded by rising oil revenues. While these efforts propelled Iran toward becoming a major regional power with rising living standards, they also alienated the Shia clergy and failed to address persistent wealth inequality and rural-to-urban disparities.

By the late 1970s, economic slowdowns and widespread grievances regarding political repression fueled intense unrest. The Shah’s reliance on the SAVAK secret police to stifle dissent proved insufficient against mounting protests led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. In January 1979, the Shah fled the country, marking the collapse of the imperial state. Today, the Pahlavi era remains a subject of intense debate, often remembered for its modernization achievements while simultaneously being criticized as an imperial dictatorship defined by corruption and the suppression of political freedom.
