From second-round draft pick to one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks
In short: In 1998, the Miami Dolphins selected Patrick Surtain with the 44th overall pick. Over the next decade, the versatile defender transitioned from a promising backup to a premier defensive star, eventually commanding a massive contract that placed him among the league's elite.
Patrick Surtain's professional journey began in the 1998 NFL draft, where he was selected in the second round by the Miami Dolphins. Initially positioned as a third-string cornerback behind veterans Sam Madison and Terrell Buckley, Surtain quickly proved his worth. By his sophomore season in 1999, head coach Jimmy Johnson promoted him to a starting role, a position he would hold with distinction for several years.
His ascent was marked by remarkable statistical peaks. In 2000, he recorded five interceptions and 21 pass deflections. The following year, he secured a massive seven-year, $27.71 million contract extension with Miami, featuring $14.00 million in guarantees. His defensive dominance reached a zenith in 2003, when he intercepted seven passes in a single season, earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
The latter part of his career saw a transition from Miami to the Kansas City Chiefs. Following a trade in April 2005, Surtain signed a significant seven-year, $50.80 million extension with the Chiefs, briefly making him the third-highest paid cornerback in the NFL. Though injuries and roster changes eventually led to his release from Kansas City in 2009, his legacy remained defined by 108 games with the Dolphins, including 344 tackles and 29 interceptions.
After retiring from play, Surtain transitioned into coaching. He served as a defensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 before taking on the role of defensive backs coach for Florida State University in 2023. His tenure with the Seminoles concluded with his dismissal from the program on December 5, 2025.
