From undrafted free agent to the highest-paid slot cornerback in the league
In short: In 2017, Kenny Moore II signed a contract with a mere $2,000 signing bonus. Fast forward to 2019, and the former Valdosta State standout had become the most lucrative slot cornerback in the NFL, securing a massive $33.30 million extension.
Kenny Moore II’s journey to NFL stardom was anything but linear. After only starting football during his final year at Lowndes High School, Moore shifted from competing in track, basketball, and soccer to becoming a premier collegiate star. At Valdosta State University, he evolved from a cornerback to a safety during his senior season, eventually ranking fifth all-time in school history with 11 career interceptions.
After being waived by the New England Patriots in September 2017, Moore was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts. He quickly proved his value, earning his first career start in Week 13 of his rookie season. By 2019, his elite performance as a slot cornerback led to a four-year, $33.30 million contract extension, which included $9.00 million guaranteed. This deal made him the highest-paid player at his position in the league.
Moore's career is defined by high-volume defensive production. During the 2021 season, he joined just one other NFL defensive back in achieving 100+ tackles alongside 10+ passes defensed. His versatility and impact earned him a Pro Bowl selection and a nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, cementing his legacy as a premier defensive specialist.
Despite his success, Moore has navigated the physical toll of the game. Injuries, such as a knee injury in 2019 and an ankle injury in late 2022, have occasionally sidelined him. Nevertheless, his ability to maintain high grades from Pro Football Focus and secure significant roles in complex defensive schemes highlights his enduring value in the NFL.
