From Portuguese Striker to Liga MX Icon: The Global Evolution of João Paulo Fernandes
In short: Born in Barcelos, João Paulo Dias Fernandes—known as Paulinho—has carved a prolific path across two continents. From his humble beginnings in the Portuguese second tier to becoming a record-breaking striker for Sporting CP and a decorated Balón de Oro winner in Mexico, his career defines the modern professional journeyman.
Born on 9 November 1992, Paulinho began his professional journey in 2012 with Trofense in the Segunda Liga. His transition to the top flight occurred in 2013 with Gil Vicente, where he gradually established himself as a reliable goalscorer. By the 2016–17 campaign, he had hit a career-best 19 goals in the second tier, a performance that earned him a move to Braga. During his time at Braga, he became the club's all-time leading European goalscorer, surpassing Alan’s record of 11 goals in November 2020.
In January 2021, Paulinho made a high-profile move to Sporting CP for a club-record fee of €16 million. This transfer reunited him with manager Ruben Amorim and proved transformative for the club. He played a pivotal role in ending Sporting’s 19-year league title drought in 2021 and secured a second championship in 2024. During his tenure, he demonstrated versatility, contributing significantly to both domestic league successes and European campaigns, including a notable hat-trick against Portimonense in December 2021.
The next chapter of his career took him to Mexico in June 2024, where he signed with Toluca. His impact in Liga MX was immediate and profound. He finished his debut season as the top scorer across both the Apertura and Clausura tournaments, totaling 27 goals. His performance was instrumental in Toluca’s Clausura championship run, where he scored in the 2–0 final victory against América. These achievements culminated in him receiving the Balón de Oro for both Player of the Year and Best Forward, cementing his status as a standout talent in international football.
Internationally, Paulinho’s path has been intermittent. After a single appearance for the Portugal under-21 side in 2012, he made his senior debut in November 2020, scoring twice against Andorra. Despite being pre-selected for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he remained away from the national squad for over five years before receiving a recall in March 2026 to face Mexico and the United States.
