From an Argentine small town to the heights of the Champions League
In short: In 2007, a fifteen-year-old boy left his home in Santa Fe for Spain. He was chasing a footballing dream that would eventually lead him from the English lower leagues through the Premier League and eventually to the pinnacle of European competition, playing in the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
Born in Murphy, Argentina, Paulo Gazzaniga’s path to professional football was a family affair. Alongside his father, Daniel, and brother, Gianfranco, he began his career at the local club Centro Recreativo Unión y Cultura. At age 15, he moved to Spain to join Valencia's youth academy, though he was eventually released in May 2011.
His subsequent journey through the English leagues saw him rise from League Two with Gillingham—where he earned the 2011–12 Young Player of the Season award—to the Premier League with Southampton. In 2017, a significant reunion occurred when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, playing under Mauricio Pochettino, the manager who shared his Argentine birthplace.
Gazzaniga's career has been defined by resilience and periods of high-stakes responsibility. After stints at clubs like Rayo Vallecano, Elche, and Fulham, he found a new chapter at Girona. During the 2023–24 season, he played every single one of the 38 La Liga matches, recording twelve clean sheets to help the club secure third place and their first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification.
While his career has seen moments of heartbreak, such as an unfortunate 90th-minute own goal against Paris Saint-Germain in September 2024, he remains a formidable presence. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted in October 2024, when he saved three penalties, including a retaken shot, during a victory against Athletic Bilbao.
