In short: Phil Kessel is one of the most durable athletes in NHL history, but his journey to 1,064 consecutive games began with a life-threatening health crisis. After surviving testicular cancer as a rookie, he transformed into a goal-scoring machine and a symbol of professional resilience.

Kessel's professional career took a dramatic turn during his first season with the Boston Bruins in 2006–07. Just months after his debut, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He underwent surgery and was declared cancer-free by December 16, 2006. Despite the severity of the illness, Kessel returned to the ice on January 9, missing only 11 regular-season games. His perseverance earned him the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2007, an award given to players who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and overcome significant adversity.

Following his time in Boston, Kessel became a cornerstone for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2009 to 2015. During this era, he established himself as a premier offensive threat, notably reaching the 30-goal mark in three consecutive seasons starting in 2008–09. He also achieved significant milestones, such as hitting the 300-point plateau on February 6, 2012. However, his tenure in Toronto was not without friction; a 2012 Sports Illustrated poll revealed that 15% of his peers considered him the easiest player in the league to intimidate.

Kessel eventually found ultimate success with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vegas Golden Knights, securing three Stanley Cup championships (2016, 2017, and 2023). Beyond his trophy cabinet, he holds a unique distinction for longevity. Starting in the 2009–10 season, Kessel embarked on an unprecedented streak of consecutive games played. He became the first person in league history to reach the 1,000-game milestone on November 17, eventually reaching a record total of 1,064 consecutive appearances.
