From elite quarterback to tight end: the versatile journey of Phil Jurkovec
In short: Phil Jurkovec’s football career is a study in extreme versatility. After dominating high school stats and breaking records at Boston College, he transitioned from a high-profile quarterback to a tight end, navigating injuries, transfers, and professional minicamps in a relentless pursuit of the game.
Born on November 3, 1999, Jurkovec first gained attention at Pine-Richland High School in Pennsylvania. Following the graduation of Ben DiNucci in 2015, Jurkovec took over as the primary quarterback, accumulating 11,144 total yards and 71 touchdown passes. His high school success, which included being named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the Year, led him to the University of Notre Dame. During his time at Pine-Richland, he participated in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. His impressive statistical output included over 8,000 passing yards.
His collegiate career was marked by significant shifts in role and location. After appearing in limited action for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 2018 and 2019, he entered the transfer portal in January 2020 to join Boston College. At Boston College, Jurkovec achieved historic success, becoming the first player in school history to record four 300-yard passing games within his first five career starts. He was also the first quarterback to record four or more such games in a single season since Matt Ryan. He initially made his collegiate debut for the Fighting Irish against Wake Forest. During his tenure at Boston College, he achieved a career-high of 358 passing yards.
Despite his offensive prowess, injuries played a significant role in his trajectory. A lower leg injury in 2020 and hand surgery in 2021 sidelined him for various stretches. Following a transfer to the University of Pittsburgh in December 2022, he underwent a major positional shift, moving from quarterback to tight end in October 2023. His professional aspirations included an invitation to the Pittsburgh Steelers' minicamp in May 2024, though he did not secure a contract. His career was further interrupted by a leg injury during a victory over Louisville. After his stint at Pittsburgh, he attended a minicamp for the Steelers in 2024.
