The unpredictable knuckleballer who dominated baseball for 24 seasons
In short: Most pitchers rely on speed or movement, but Phil Niekro relied on chaos. Using a treacherous knuckleball learned from a coal miner, he became the only pitcher to win 300 games using the pitch, frustrating the greatest hitters in history with its erratic, dancing flight.
Phil Niekro, famously nicknamed "Knucksie," was a master of the knuckleball, a pitch so unpredictable that baseball legend Pete Rose claimed it was a "miserable way to make a living" to try and hit it. Unlike standard pitches, the knuckleball's erratic movement often left even the most skilled hitters and catchers bewildered. Catcher Bob Uecker once joked that the only way to catch one was to wait for it to stop rolling.
Niekro's career was a testament to longevity and specialized skill. He played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, spanning from 1964 to 1987, and played for teams including the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians, the New York Yankees, and the Toronto Blue Jays. He holds the distinction of being the only knuckleballer to reach the 300-win milestone, finishing his career with 318 victories.
His dominance was not limited to his youth. Even after the age of 40, Niekro secured 121 career victories, a record that stood until 2023. His ability to adapt and maintain his effectiveness allowed him to remain a regular major leaguer until age 48. In 1997, his lifetime of achievement was recognized with induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, making him the only player elected that year.
Beyond his individual stats, Niekro's legacy is tied to his family. He and his brother Joe amassed 539 combined wins, which as of 2013, was the most by brothers in baseball history. The brothers' pitching foundation was laid in a backyard, where they learned the pitch from a coal miner.
