One of only seven nations to compete in every Asian Games
In short: The Philippines holds a rare distinction in international sports: it is one of just seven countries to have competed in every single edition of the Asian Games since their inception in 1951. This enduring presence marks a legacy of consistency across decades of continental competition.
The Philippines' involvement in Asian multi-sport events dates back to the very beginning. On 13 February 1949, New Delhi hosted the creation of the Asian Games Federation, where this nation joined as a primary founder. While that specific federation was disbanded in 1981 and replaced by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the Philippines maintained its commitment to the games, participating in every edition starting in 1951.
The Philippines holds a diverse range of events due to its status within the OCA's South East Asian Zone. This includes the primary Asian Summer Games, the Asian Winter Games, and several specialized events. Notably, the Philippines has participated in all editions of the Asian Indoor Games and has sent delegations to both editions of the biennial Asian Beach Games.
The nation's performance across these diverse arenas varies significantly. In the Asian Indoor Games, the country saw its peak performance in 2009 in Hanoi, where it won 10 medals. In the inaugural 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games, it secured 18 medals, including golds in taekwondo and wushu. While the Philippines currently ranks 13th in the all-time Asian Games medal table based on total gold medals, its history is defined by a persistent presence in every continental cycle.
This long-term participation highlights a deep integration into the Asian sporting landscape. From winning a curling gold at the Asian Winter Games on February 14 to competing in the Asian Youth Games in Singapore, the Philippines has consistently sent athletes to represent the South East Asian Zone across various disciplines and age groups.
