From religious opposition to global stages: the rise of Philippine women's basketball
In short: In the early 1900s, Filipino women were told that basketball was inappropriate for them. Today, the national team competes on the world stage. This journey from local controversy to international promotion reveals a century-long struggle for athletic recognition and the evolution of a national sporting identity.
The history of women's basketball in the Philippines is marked by a striking paradox of promotion and prohibition. Introduced by Americans in 1910 to promote health and citizenship, the sport faced immediate pushback from conservative groups. The Catholic Church, in particular, opposed women playing in bloomers, viewing the attire as scandalous. This friction eventually forced a compromise—allowing skirts over bloomers—but the momentum shifted elsewhere, as many women turned to volleyball and indoor softball instead.
The modern era of the national team, managed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), has seen a significant professionalization of the roster. The present squad features athletes recruited from various sources, such as the US NCAA, the Australian NBL, the Women’s Maharlika Professional Basketball League, the NCAA Philippines, the UAAP, plus professional circuits throughout Asia and Europe. This global scouting network has helped the team establish itself as the highest-ranked side in Southeast Asia.
The team's identity has shifted through several branding eras, notably 'Perlas Pilipinas' (2007–2019) and the current 'Gilas Pilipinas Women' branding established in May 2019. A major milestone occurred in 2017 when the team secured promotion to Level 1 of the FIBA Asia Women's Championships following an 82–76 victory over India. Most recently, the team achieved a historic milestone in 2023 by avoiding the relegation playoff for the first time, finishing sixth in a tournament of eight teams.
The program continues to expand its reach, moving beyond regional play. In August 2024, the team competed in its first non-FIBA Asia competition, a pre-qualifying tournament in Rwanda. This trajectory reflects a move toward global integration, supported by major partnerships with sponsors like Discovery Suites, Ever Bilena Cosmetics, and Adidas.
