In short: Founded in 1975, the Philippine Basketball Association is a global pioneer. As the first professional basketball league in Asia, it emerged after team owners grew tired of amateur regulations and national team interference, establishing a professional standard that remains a cornerstone of Philippine sports culture today.

The PBA's origins lie in a dispute over control. In the mid-1970s, team owners within the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) were frustrated by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP). Under the leadership of Gonzalo "Lito" Puyat, the BAP exerted tight control and frequently removed players for national team duty without consulting the owners. To circumvent these amateur requirements, nine teams—including Mariwasa-Noritake Porcelainmakers and Toyota Comets—announced the formation of the PBA on January 23, 1975.

The league's inaugural game took place on April 9, 1975, at the Araneta Coliseum. It was led by first commissioner Leopoldo Prieto and first president Emerson Coseteng. Today, the league operates with twelve company-branded franchise teams and follows a hybrid regulatory framework derived from both the NBA and FIBA rules.

Three main tournaments shape the competitive field: the Governors' Cup, the Commissioner's Cup, and the Philippine Cup. While the Philippine Cup restricts participation to Filipino athletes, the remaining two permit one foreign 'import'. Securing a 'Grand Slam'—claiming all three conference titles within one season—represents the ultimate triumph. While the San Miguel Beermen hold a record 31 championships, the defunct Crispa Redmanizers remain the only team to have achieved two Grand Slams.

The league's scale is significant; as of the 2022–23 season, the PBA reported ₱200 million in net revenue and reached an average television audience of 4 million per game. In terms of live spectacle, the league has seen massive attendance, with a record 54,589 fans attending a Commissioner's Cup Finals game at the Philippine Arena during the 2022–23 season.
