In short: Phyla-Vell is not just another superhero; she is a biological anomaly. Born from a reality reshaped by her brother's madness, her very existence is a subtle alteration in a new universe. From Captain Marvel to the Avatar of Oblivion, her journey explores the heavy price of cosmic power.

Writer Peter David and artist Paul Azaceta introduced Phyla-Vell in Captain Marvel vol. 5 #16 during November 2003. Her origin is deeply tied to the instability of her family lineage. She is the daughter of the late Mar-Vell and the genetically engineered Elysius. Her existence is a direct consequence of a cosmic shift: her brother, Genis-Vell, once destroyed and subsequently recreated the universe, leaving this new reality with subtle differences, including Phyla's presence. Her very name is derived from biological classification terms, specifically phylum and genus. This unique lineage was established after her mother, Elysius, successfully created her second offspring.

Throughout her history, she has operated under several identities, including Quasar, Captain Marvel, and Martyr. Her powers are formidable, encompassing superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to act as an 'energy sponge,' absorbing and returning energy blasts. As Quasar, she utilized the quantum bands—originally owned by Wendell Vaughn—to manipulate energy on a stellar level and create solid constructs. She also gained cosmic awareness and became a highly skilled combatant. These abilities were further enhanced when she wielded the quantum bands to control vast amounts of energy.

Her narrative is defined by high-stakes sacrifices. To save her partner, Moondragon, Phyla made a deal to become the Avatar of Oblivion, adopting the name Martyr. This transformation shifted her personality into a more aggressive and abrasive figure. Her story eventually reached a tragic conclusion during a conflict involving the character Magus, where she was killed by her own sword, though she was later revealed to have survived in suspended animation before being killed by Thanos. This transition occurred after she lost her quantum bands to the villain Maelstrom. Her new persona was marked by a much more aggressive and abrasive temperament.
