In short: In 1994, professional baseball returned to Maine with a new identity. Beyond the stadium renovations and the connection to the Boston Red Sox, the team's very soul was shaped by a piece of sports history: a broken bat that gave birth to a beloved franchise mascot.

The Portland Sea Dogs began play in April 1994, following an expansion award in October 1992. Before their arrival, the city had to transform Hadlock Field—a high-school stadium—into a professional ballpark through efforts led by city manager Robert Ganley. The team’s first official game was a 7–6 loss to the Albany-Colonie Yankees, but they secured their first-ever victory shortly after, defeating the Reading Phillies 2–1 in a 14th-inning thriller.

The team's identity was crafted by cartoonist Guy Gilchrist. Inspired by the high-selling logos of the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Bulls, Gilchrist designed an animated harbor seal named Slugger. The mascot's name was born from a unique source: a cracked bat belonging to legendary player Carl Yastrzemski, which Gilchrist had received from Roger LaFrancois in the early 1980s. Slugger has been the face of the franchise since May 6, 1994.

While the team started as a Florida Marlins affiliate on May 3, 1993, they transitioned to the Boston Red Sox system for the 2003 season. The collaboration yielded major triumphs, such as a 2006 Double-A title—the initial one for a Red Sox affiliate since New Britain's 1983 victory. Today, the Sea Dogs play at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field, a venue that has hosted figures ranging from former President George H. W. Bush to NFL coach Bill Parcells.

The stadium itself features a nod to Boston: the Maine Monster, a 37-foot replica of Fenway Park's Green Monster. This feature, along with a pavilion modeled after Fenway's Green Monster seats, reinforces the deep connection between the Portland franchise and its Major League parent club.
