In short: Since fielding their first team in 1947, the Portland State Vikings have navigated multiple NCAA divisions and conference realignments. From their early days as an independent program to their current status in the Big Sky Conference, the Vikings have built a history defined by persistent rivalries and playoff aspirations.

The Portland State Vikings football program, based in Oregon, officially began its journey in 1947. Over the following decades, the team navigated various competitive landscapes, including stints as an NCAA College Division independent from 1965 to 1972 and as an NCAA Division I-AA independent between 1978 and 1980. The program eventually joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996, where it currently competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Success for the Vikings has been measured in different ways across these eras. While the team has appeared in the I-AA/FCS playoffs twice, they have also seen significant action in the Division II postseason, making eight appearances between 1987 and 1995 with a 12–8 record. Individual excellence is also recognized, with one player from the program having been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Rivalries serve as a cornerstone of the program's identity. The Vikings maintain a long-standing series with the Montana Grizzlies, having played 49 games against them since 1965—the most frequent opponent in school history. As of 2025, Montana leads that series 36–13. Additionally, the Dam Cup was established in 2010 to formalize a rivalry with the Eastern Washington Eagles, aiming to foster school spirit and alumni engagement across the Pacific Northwest. These matchups, along with protected annual games against Northern Colorado, continue to define the competitive rhythm of the Vikings' season.
