In short: Born into the heart of Lesotho's monarchy, Princess Senate Mohato Seeiso represents both a royal lineage and a legal tension. While she holds significant cultural importance, current laws regarding the throne remain a subject of quiet, ongoing debate within the kingdom.

On 7 October 2001, Maseru Private Hospital in Lesotho's capital welcomed Princess Senate Mohato Seeiso. As the eldest child of King Letsie III and Queen 'Masenate Mohato Seeiso, her arrival was a significant event for the nation. Shortly after her birth, on 10 November 2001, she was baptised into the Catholic Church under the name Mary.

Despite her position as the firstborn, the current legal framework governing the Lesothan line of succession does not permit women to inherit the throne. This has led to internal support within Lesotho for reforming these rules to allow female succession. However, as of now, no legislative changes have been enacted to alter the traditional path of inheritance.

The arrival of her brother, Prince Lerotholi Seeiso, in 2007 effectively shifted the immediate line of succession, as he is now the heir to the throne. Nevertheless, Princess Senate has carved out a distinct role for herself outside of the direct line of succession. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa, having completed her studies in 2024.

Today, the Princess focuses her efforts on humanitarian advocacy. She serves as the patron of the Coalition on the Rights of the Child, a non-governmental organization. In this capacity, she helps oversee the implementation and monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of the Child within Lesotho, ensuring that the rights of the nation's youngest citizens are upheld.
