From statistics student to one of the decade's greatest cinematic performers
In short: Before he was a celebrated figure in Telugu cinema, Priyadarshi Pulikonda was studying the logic of numbers. Today, he is recognized not just for comedy, but for transformative performances that have earned him a place among the most significant actors of his generation.
Priyaryadshi Pulikonda's journey to the screen was far from linear. Born in Khammam to professor Pulikonda Subbachary and Jayalakshmi, his early years were spent moving through the diverse landscapes of Hyderabad, from the Old City to Gachibowli. After completing a BSc in Statistics at MNR Degree & PG College, he obtained a postgraduate qualification in Mass Communication through the University of Hyderabad. His family's move to Hyderabad occurred when he was just two years old. This period of his life saw him residing in the Old City until reaching the age of ten.
His cinematic breakthrough arrived in 2016 with the romantic comedy Pelli Choopulu. While the film was lauded for its clean humor and storyline, Priyadarshi specifically earned acclaim for his use of the Telangana dialect. This talent for character-driven performance was further cemented in 2019 with his role in Mallesham, a performance so impactful it was included in Film Companion's list of the '100 Greatest Performances of the Decade'. His filmography also includes a role as a terrorist in the 2016 production Terror, which received positive reviews. He has also appeared in the Mahesh Babu film Spyder, which was helmed by director AR Murugadoss.
The actor's creative drive was sparked by a profound moment of inspiration: watching the film Sagara Sangamam, which he described as a 'paradigm shift' in his life. This passion has led him from supporting roles in major productions like Jai Lava Kusa and Spyder to leading roles in films such as Mithai and Balagam. His versatility extends to the digital space as well, notably in the web series Loser, where he portrayed a rifle shooter to critical praise. The actor's personal life is also connected to his academic years, as he married writer Richa Sharma in 2018. She had previously been his senior during their time at the University of Hyderabad.
