How a high school standout became a historic NBA and NHL sibling duo
In short: Before becoming an NBA professional, Quentin Grimes was a high school phenom who dominated Texas basketball. His journey through college transfers and multiple NBA trades has led him to the Los Angeles Lakers, while his brother achieved history in a different professional league.
Born on May 8, 2000, Quentin Marshall Grimes emerged as a standout at The Woodlands College Park High School in Texas. After graduating in 2018 with a 3.38 GPA, he had already established himself as a premier talent, earning honors such as McDonald's All-American and Gatorade State Player of the Year. His high school career was marked by prolific scoring, averaging 29.5 points per game during his senior year.
Grimes' collegiate path was defined by strategic moves. He initially committed to the University of Kansas in November 2017, but after his freshman season, he transferred to the University of Houston. At Houston, he achieved significant success, including being named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2021 and leading the team to the NCAA Final Four. This performance propelled him into the professional ranks.
His NBA career has been characterized by movement across several franchises. Drafted 25th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2021, he was quickly traded to the New York Knicks. Following stints with the Detroit Pistons and the Dallas Mavericks, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers, where he recorded career-high scoring performances of 44 and 46 points in early 2025. In July 2026, he committed to the Los Angeles Lakers via a $60 million, four-year deal.
Beyond his individual accolades, Grimes holds a unique place in sports history. Tyler Myers, his half-brother through his mother, plays professional ice hockey for the Dallas Stars. Together, they represent the first pair of brothers to play in both the NBA and the NHL.
