The grueling path from community college to a €2.7 million European payday
In short: Richaun Holmes didn't start with an elite scholarship or a direct path to the pros. He transformed himself through extreme physical labor, evolving from a 6'2" guard into a dominant NBA rim protector who eventually became one of Europe's highest-paid stars.
Holmes' journey began far from the spotlight of Division I basketball. Despite his athleticism, he received no scholarship offers until committing to Moraine Valley Community College in Illinois. During that single season, he established a formidable statistical profile, averaging 19.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and an impressive 5.2 blocks per game. This performance earned him All-American honors and a transfer to Bowling Green University, where his development took a more deliberate turn.
At Bowling Green, Holmes underwent a rigorous physical and technical transformation under coach Chris Jans. To improve his versatility, he began practicing by taking up to 1,000 shots a day to develop a three-point game while maintaining his identity as a rim protector with quick feet. By his senior year, this dedication paid off: he averaged 14.7 points and 2.7 blocks per game, leading the team to a 21–12 record and a CollegeInsider.com Tournament appearance.
Various NBA teams, such as the Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, and Philadelphia 76ers, hosted him throughout his work life. While playing for the Kings during 2020–21, he achieved personal bests in assists (1.7), rebounds (8.3), and points (14.2) across every one of his 61 starts. However, his trajectory also faced hurdles, including a wrist fracture in late 2017 and various contract shifts.
In 2025, Holmes transitioned to the Greek Basketball League and the EuroLeague with Panathinaikos on a two-year deal worth approximately €2.7 million for the first year. While he initially found success—including a standout performance of 24 points and 10 rebounds against ASVEL Basket—his tenure was cut short in March 2026. This followed a contract termination sparked by a knee injury and a public fallout with head coach Ergin Ataman over perceived effort.
