In short: Reed Sheppard has rapidly ascended from a consensus four-star recruit to an NBA starter. After dominating high school scoring in Kentucky, he transitioned through a decorated collegiate career at the University of Kentucky to become the third overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Born on June 24, 2004, in London, Kentucky, Reed Sheppard’s trajectory has been defined by consistent statistical dominance. While attending North Laurel for high school, he proved to be a top prospect, topping Kentucky in scoring during his sophomore year with a 30.1 points per game average. He earned the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year title during his junior season, while producing 7.6 assists and 25.5 points per game. He was eventually named Kentucky Mr. Basketball. By the end of his secondary school years, he had accumulated 1,050 rebounds, 1,214 assists and 3,727 points.

While playing for the University of Kentucky, Sheppard secured SEC Freshman of the Year awards alongside national freshman honours from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association. His ability to adapt was evident during the GLOBL JAM tournament in Canada, where he helped the Wildcats go undefeated. He chose Kentucky over offers from Virginia and Louisville. This decision followed his commitment in November 2021.

His professional transition has been marked by significant milestones. After making his NBA debut in October 2024, Sheppard faced the challenges of a rookie season, including a stint with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. However, he quickly demonstrated his potential, recording a career-high 25 points in his first NBA start on March 3, 2025. After Fred VanVleet suffered an injury, Sheppard took on more offensive responsibility for Houston in the 2025–26 season, playing 82 games and averaging 3.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 13.5 points. He signed a rookie-scale contract in July 2024. His debut match resulted in a narrow loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
