In short: What began as a single day of music in 2011 has transformed into a touring phenomenon. Once anchored in London, BBC Radio 2’s flagship festival has navigated pandemic cancellations, royal mourning, and a complete rebranding to bring massive live performances to cities across the UK.

Originally known as Radio 2 Live or Radio 2's Festival in a Day, the event launched on 11 September 2011. For nearly a decade, from 2011 to 2019, it served as a London staple, held annually in Hyde Park. The festival's history is marked by unexpected shifts; the inaugural event was nearly headlined by Lionel Richie, but ill health forced his cancellation. Similarly, the 2019 edition saw Emeli Sandé withdraw on the day after losing her voice, leaving a gap filled by a DJ set from Craig Charles.

The festival's stability was tested by global and national upheaval. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a virtual format in 2020, featuring home-recorded sets from artists like Nile Rodgers and The Killers. In 2022, a planned revival in Leeds at Temple Newsam was abruptly cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. This period of instability led to a rebranding as Radio 2 Live, before the event eventually reclaimed its 'Radio 2 in the Park' identity with a touring model.

Since 2023, the festival has abandoned its London-centric roots to visit various UK locations. After a successful stint in Leicester, the event moved to Preston in 2024 and is slated for Chelmsford in 2025. Looking ahead, the 2026 edition is set for Stirling, Scotland, marking a significant expansion. This upcoming festival, scheduled for 11 to 13 September 2026, is expected to feature Chaka Khan as the headliner, with guest appearances by Snoop Dogg and Alexandra Burke.
