The chaotic reality behind the world's most famous music festival line-ups
In short: Glastonbury is famous for its diverse stages, but the official programme rarely tells the whole story. From equipment stranded in Europe to last-minute cancellations due to illness or malaria, the festival's history is defined as much by who failed to show up as by those who headlined.
Since its inception in 1970, the greenfield festival near Pilton, England, has faced constant logistical and biological disruptions. In its early years, Pink Floyd missed out on performing because their equipment was stranded in Europe. Even when artists are confirmed, the reality on the ground often shifts; for instance, Amazulu missed their scheduled Saturday opening slot on the Pyramid Stage because they did not arrive in time, forcing The Smiths to perform earlier than planned. In 1971, Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance stepped in for Judie Tzuke after she contracted laryngitis. Additionally, the 1990 edition was abandoned entirely due to security breaches and fence issues.
The festival's history is also marked by sudden replacements. Following Ian Dury & The Blockheads' withdrawal for health reasons, Björn Again took their slot in 1998. In 2012, the festival organizers implemented a "fallow year" to accommodate the London Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The COVID-19 pandemic caused two back-to-back cancellations throughout 2020 and 2021, yet a brief live-streamed event, Live at Worthy Farm, occurred in May 2021. In 2026, Toumani Diabaté was replaced by Jupiter & Okwess International after a malaria diagnosis. Furthermore, the 2015 edition saw All About Eve headline on Friday following a request from Suzanne Vega.
The complexity of these line-ups is further illustrated by the high-profile guest appearances that occur during sets. Recent years have seen artists like Stormzy joined by Chris Martin, Dave, and Fredo, while Miley Cyrus shared the stage with Mark Ronson, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lil Nas X. These spontaneous or planned collaborations highlight the festival's evolving role as a massive, unpredictable cultural intersection. The Killers' performance included guests such as Pet Shop Boys and Johnny Marr. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue's set featured Nick Cave and Chris Martin.
