Political controversy and musical legends defined the 2025 Glastonbury Festival
In short: Beyond the headliners like Olivia Rodrigo and the 1975, Glastonbury 2025 became a lightning rod for international debate. From unexpected political statements by Kneecap and Bob Vylan to Neil Young's brief withdrawal over corporate concerns, the festival proved that music and politics remain inextricably linked at Worthy Farm.
The 2025 edition, held from 25 to 29 June at Worthy Farm, was marked by significant political friction. Performances by the punk-rap duo Bob Vylan and the group Kneecap sparked international controversy following statements regarding Israel and Palestine. Bob Vylan's set included chants against the IDF, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as 'appalling hate speech.' The Community Security Trust reported that the day following the performance saw 26 antisemitic incidents in the UK, the highest daily number recorded in the first half of 2025. While British police eventually decided not to take action against Kneecap due to insufficient evidence, the BBC opted not to broadcast their set live, though it reached over two million viewers via TikTok.
The festival's lineup also featured high-profile shifts and reunions. Neil Young initially caused confusion by announcing his withdrawal on 1 January 2025, citing concerns over 'corporate control' and the BBC partnership, before clarifying two days later that he would headline with his band, the Chrome Hearts. Other notable moments included the return of The Prodigy to the Other Stage—their first appearance since 2009—and a surprise Pyramid Stage set by Pulp, performing for the first time there since 1998.
The logistical demand for the event remains immense. General admission tickets, priced at £373.50 for the full weekend, sold out in just thirty-five minutes following their release on 17 November 2024. The event continues to serve as a massive cultural touchstone, blending legendary musical slots, such as Rod Stewart's Sunday performance, with modern pop icons and intense political discourse.
