The dual-threat pioneer who redefined the quarterback position
In short: Before the era of mobile superstars, Randall Cunningham transformed the NFL. A punter turned elite playmaker, he used uncanny scrambling ability to dismantle defenses, setting records for rushing yards and paving the way for the modern, athletic quarterback.
Randall Cunningham’s journey from a UNLV punter to an NFL icon is a study in versatility. At UNLV, he earned All-American honors as a punter in 1983 and 1984. When drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 1985 NFL draft, he arrived as the first quarterback selected in that draft class. While his early rookie season was marked by high interception numbers, his ability to escape pressure quickly became his trademark.
During his 16-season career, Cunningham became a statistical anomaly. At the time of his retirement, he led the NFL in quarterback rushing yards, eventually finishing with 4,928 yards on 775 carries. His 1990 season was particularly remarkable; he averaged 8.0 yards per rush, the highest ever for an Eagle with at least 100 attempts. In 1998, playing for the Minnesota Vikings, he led the league with a 106.0 passer rating and helped his team set an NFL record for regular season points scored.
However, his physical dominance came at a cost. His 1986 season saw him sacked a then-NFL record 72 times, and a devastating ACL tear in 1991 visibly stripped much of his signature speed. Despite these setbacks, he remained a formidable force, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and becoming the first Black quarterback elected as an NFC starter. Beyond the field, Cunningham transitioned from professional football to roles as an ordained Protestant minister and a high-level track and field coach.
