From Algerian youth academies to the heights of the Bundesliga
In short: Ramy Bensebaini’s path through European football is a study in perseverance. After testing his skills on trials with Porto and Arsenal, the Algerian defender navigated various loans in Belgium and France. He eventually established himself as a significant force in the Bundesliga, moving from Mönchengladbach to Borussia Dortmund.
Born in Constantine on 16 April 1995, Amir Selmane Rami Bensebaini began his professional ascent within the Paradou AC youth system in 2008. His early career was marked by high-profile opportunities; in 2013, he underwent trials with Porto and the English Premier League side Arsenal. During his time with Arsenal's under-21 squad, he featured in friendlies against Luton Town and Colchester.
The mid-2010s saw a series of strategic moves across Europe's major leagues. Following his development at Paradou, Bensebaini spent the 2014–15 season on loan at the Belgian club Lierse, where he made 23 league appearances. He then moved to France to play for Montpellier during the 2015–16 Ligue 1 season. By July 2016, he had secured a permanent four-year contract with the French side Rennes.
Bensebaini's most significant impact came in the Bundesliga. After joining Borussia Mönchengladbach in August 2019 for 8 million euros, he delivered several memorable performances, including a brace in a 2–1 victory over Bayern München in December 2019. This performance earned him the club's Player of the Month award for that month. He also found success in European competition, scoring a penalty against Inter Milan in October 2020.
After deciding not to renew his contract with Gladbach in early 2023, Bensebaini joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in June 2023. Alongside his club career, he has been a fixture for the Algerian national team, earning his first call-up in November 2015 and making his senior debut in January 2017. He remains a key figure in the national setup, having been named in the squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
