How a California punk band survived legal threats and defined a pop-culture obsessed sound
In short: Born in 1978 from the teenage ambitions of brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald, Redd Kross evolved from raw hardcore punk into a unique rock entity. Their journey, marked by legal battles over their name and a deep fascination with pop culture, spans decades of influential albums, film soundtracks, and reinvention.
The band originated in Hawthorne, California, as a punk group called the Tourists. By 1979, the brothers had rebranded as Red Cross, a name allegedly inspired by a scene in the film The Exorcist. This early iteration leaned into hardcore punk, but the group soon faced a significant hurdle: the International Red Cross threatened legal action over the name. In 1982, the band officially adopted the spelling Redd Kross to avoid litigation, a change that coincided with their transition toward more diverse rock and roll styles.
Throughout their career, the McDonald brothers infused their music with a distinct obsession for pop culture. Their 1984 album Born Innocent serves as a prime example, featuring tracks that referenced figures ranging from Charles Manson and Linda Blair to Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. This thematic approach extended beyond their own records; the band became a staple of film soundtracks, contributing music to projects like Desperate Teenage Lovedolls, Good Burger, and PCU. Their creative output has remained remarkably consistent, culminating in the 2024 release of a self-titled double album and a memoir titled Now You’re One of Us.
The band's lineup has been fluid, featuring a revolving door of musicians who helped shape their sound across eight studio albums and three EPs. Notable eras included the 1990 signing with Atlantic Records for the release of Third Eye and the 1993 release of Phaseshifter, which saw the band touring alongside acts like Stone Temple Pilots and The Spin Doctors. Despite an indefinite hiatus following the death of guitarist Eddie Kurdziel in 1999, the group has continued to document their legacy, most recently through the 2024 documentary Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story.
