How an undrafted free agent rose from Alabama to a Super Bowl victory
In short: In the high-stakes world of the NFL, most players are selected in the draft. Reed Blankenship, however, had to fight for a roster spot as an undrafted free agent. From high school standout in Alabama to a Super Bowl champion, his journey is a masterclass in professional perseverance.
Born on March 2, 1999, in Lester, Alabama, Reed Blankenship’s path to professional football was far from guaranteed. After a decorated high school career at West Limestone High School—where he earned Player of the Year honors in 2016 and was a multi-sport standout in football and basketball—he chose to play college football for the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
Blankenship's collegiate career was marked by significant defensive production and resilience. During his time at Middle Tennessee, he set an all-time school record for tackles in a game against Charlotte and was a consistent force, earning multiple all-conference honors. Despite a season-ending leg injury in 2019, he returned to lead the team in tackles during his fifth year as a senior in 2021, recording 110 stops and ranking third in the nation for fumble recoveries.
His professional ascent began when the Philadelphia Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2022, to a three-year, $2.56 million contract. After competing for a roster spot during training camp, he transitioned from a backup to a vital starter. His impact was felt during the Eagles' successful 2022 season, which included a trip to Super Bowl LVII. He continued this momentum through 2024 and 2025, eventually securing a Super Bowl ring in a 40–22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
A $24.75 million, three-year deal with the Houston Texans in March 2026 solidified Blankenship's status, transforming him from an ignored prospect into a top-tier professional safety.
