New framework reveals how cultural and natural heritage are deeply intertwined
In short: Researchers developing a new valuation framework found that the environment is much more than just a backdrop for history. By analyzing six case studies involving European coastal and maritime heritage, the study observed that people often view the natural environment itself as a form of heritage, finding deep meaning in the way nature and culture overlap.
The study developed a novel framework to bridge the gap between heritage and environmental value categories. By applying this to participatory research on European maritime governance, the authors demonstrated how human-nature relations are shaped by multiple value types. However, the findings are based on specific case examples rather than a universal application.
Why it matters: Understanding how we value nature requires recognizing that cultural heritage and the environment are fundamentally linked.
