In short: In 2020, WWE introduced Retribution: a masked faction seeking revenge against the system. Despite featuring talented athletes, the stable became one of the most mocked and criticized storylines in modern wrestling history, earning awards for being the worst gimmick of its year.

Retribution debuted on August 3, 2020, with a dramatic sequence involving electrical malfunctions and a generator fire at the WWE Performance Center. The group was portrayed as hoodlums seeking to retaliate against perceived injustices within the company. However, the presentation failed to resonate; critics like Zack Heydorn noted that the group conveyed no sense of danger or fear, while others described the execution as rushed, chaotic, and poorly conceived.

The stable's internal logic was frequently questioned by industry figures. While individual members were often praised for their skills, the overarching narrative was dismissed by peers and critics alike as a 'hideous angle.' Even fellow wrestlers reportedly mocked the group's ring names and presentation, with some comparing the aesthetic to a low-quality video game. The faction also faced social media mockery for unintended parallels to political movements, though WWE denied any such intent.

The group's run was marked by frequent losses against factions like The Hurt Business and The New Day. It ultimately dissolved in March 2021 at Fastlane after internal tensions boiled over, leading to a physical attack on the leader, Mustafa Ali. Following a backlash from various observers, the group earned the Gooker Award for poorest storyline and was ranked as 2020's second-worst character by Wrestling Observer Newsletter voters.

Following the breakup, many members were repackaged or released. Some, like Mia Yim (Reckoning), eventually returned to previous identities, while others like T-Bar (Dijak) underwent character shifts involving symbolic acts like burning their Retribution masks.
