How a struggling wrestling stable transformed into a beloved, cult-like phenomenon
In short: The Dark Order began as a poorly received wrestling faction plagued by viral, unconvincing punches. Yet, through a strategic leadership change and a poignant real-life tragedy, the group evolved from villainous outsiders into a fan-favorite collective, proving that even the most disastrous gimmicks can find redemption in the ring.
Debuting at All Elite Wrestling's inaugural Double or Nothing event in May 2019, The Dark Order initially featured Evil Uno and Stu Grayson. The group struggled to gain traction, hampered by a cold reception and a notorious incident where a masked henchman, or creeper, threw visibly fake punches that went viral for all the wrong reasons. The stable’s early identity relied on mysterious vignettes and a faceless spokesman, failing to resonate until the arrival of Mr. Brodie Lee in March 2020.
Brodie Lee, revealed as the group's leader and 'Exalted One,' revitalized the faction by bringing a more aggressive, dominant presence. He successfully captured the TNT Championship in August 2020, solidifying the group's standing. However, the stable's trajectory shifted dramatically following Lee's untimely death in December 2020. In a rare move, AEW honored his legacy with a dedicated tribute episode, which saw the group transition from villains to heroic characters. They even named Lee's eight-year-old son, Brodie Jr., as their honorary leader.
The group's narrative depth lies in its recruitment-focused gimmick, which Stu Grayson once likened to a Scientology-like cult. Despite the tragic loss of their leader, the members continued to evolve, attempting to recruit wrestlers like Hangman Page while maintaining their unique, faction-based identity. The group has seen various members join and depart, including Colt Cabana and Preston Vance, reflecting the fluid nature of professional wrestling stables. Today, the legacy of The Dark Order remains a testament to how storytelling can pivot in the face of reality, turning a disastrous debut into a lasting cultural footprint within the industry.
