How a Texas jazz student became the backbone of heavy metal's most iconic sound
In short: Rex Brown is the longest-serving member of Pantera, but his influence extends far beyond the band's legendary riffs. A classically trained pianist and jazz bassist who once turned down a university scholarship, Brown redefined the heavy metal rhythm section by weaving complex walking basslines beneath Dimebag Darrell's searing guitar solos.
Born in Graham, Texas, in 1964, Rex Robert Brown was introduced to music by his grandmother, who taught him piano and exposed him to the ragtime rhythms of Scott Joplin. Though he eventually became a pillar of the heavy metal scene, his musical foundation was built on jazz. In high school, he played in a jazz band alongside future Pantera bandmates Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell. His technical proficiency was such that he was offered a scholarship to the University of North Texas, though he ultimately declined to pursue his own path in music.
Brown joined Pantera in 1982, initially performing under the alias Rex Rocker. While the band began with a different sound, the arrival of vocalist Phil Anselmo in 1986 and the subsequent release of 1990's Cowboys from Hell marked a commercial turning point. Brown became known for his distinct playing style, often utilizing a pick and taping his fingers to protect them from the wear of constant sliding. His contribution to the band's signature sound involved intricate, melodic basslines that provided a sophisticated counterpoint to the aggressive, heavy guitar work that defined the era.
Beyond his tenure with Pantera, Brown has maintained a prolific career as a collaborator and solo artist. He has contributed to projects ranging from the supergroup Down to collaborations with Jerry Cantrell and Crowbar. In 2013, he published his autobiography, Official Truth: 101 Proof, which detailed the band's history and his personal experiences. Despite severe health challenges in 2009, including acute pancreatitis that required major surgery, Brown has remained a fixture in the industry, continuing to tour and release music, including his 2017 solo debut, Smoke on This… and his 2023 work with the supergroup Elegant Weapons.
