In short: How did a self-taught teenager from a small English village transform a teacher's nickname into a global music career? Discover the journey of Alexander James O'Connor, the multi-instrumentalist who blended bedroom pop with hip-hop to conquer the international charts.

Born on 4 May 1998, in Grayshott, England, Alexander James O'Connor began his musical journey far from the spotlight. His early years were defined by choral singing at age five and later studying drumming at the BRIT School. It was during his school years that he adopted the moniker Rex Orange County, a name derived from a nickname, "The OC," given to him by a teacher due to his surname, O'Connor. His musical foundations were further shaped by his time as a percussionist, a role that offered him unique access to the diverse musical projects of his peers. He also developed his skills on the piano through self-directed study.

O'Connor's rise was fueled by a DIY ethos. At 16, he taught himself to produce using Apple's Logic software, eventually self-releasing his debut album, Bcos U Will Never B Free, in 2015. His trajectory shifted significantly after receiving an email from American rapper Tyler, the Creator, which led to a high-profile collaboration on the album Flower Boy in 2017. This partnership helped him secure a deal with RCA Records. His early work, such as the single "Uno," was noted for its hypnotic and creative energy. This period of growth also saw him collaborating with the producer Two Inch Punch, who helped establish his management team.

His discography has seen consistent commercial success and genre experimentation. While his 2019 album, Pony, marked his first entry into the US Billboard 200—peaking at number 3—his 2022 release, Who Cares?, achieved the milestone of topping the UK Albums Chart. Despite facing significant legal challenges in 2022, which were ultimately dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service, O'Connor has continued to evolve, releasing his fifth studio album, The Alexander Technique, in late 2024. His recent output includes the 2024 album The Alexander Technique, which features a notable collaboration with James Blake. He has also expanded his reach through international tours and festival headlining slots, such as in Jakarta.
