How a bank commercial jingle became a wedding staple
In short: Richard Carpenter didn't just find a hit; he engineered one from a television commercial. By identifying the voices behind a bank's theme song, he transformed a brief jingle into a Gold-certified record that remains a staple of modern weddings.
In the late 1960s, Richard Carpenter was navigating the early stages of his career with his sister, Karen. After signing with A&M Records in 1969, the duo faced initial skepticism; their first album, Offering, was not a significant seller, leading some at the label to suggest they be dropped. However, producer Herb Alpert insisted on giving them another chance, providing the artistic freedom that would define their sound.
The turning point came when Richard noticed a commercial for Crocker National Bank on television. He recognized the voices of songwriters Paul Williams and Roger Nichols on the theme song "We've Only Just Begun." After confirming a full version existed, Carpenter arranged and produced it. The Billboard Hot 100 ranking reached No. 2. The track earned RIAA Gold status, effectively initiating the professional journeys for Nichols and Williams.
This success was built on a foundation of rigorous musical exploration. Before their mainstream breakthrough, Richard formed several groups, including the Richard Carpenter Trio, Spectrum, and Summerchimes. These projects served as a laboratory for the duo's signature broad harmonies. Even a brief stint at Disneyland in 1967—where they were fired for playing modern pop instead of period music—led to the creation of the song "Mr. Guder," a track born out of pure aggravation against their supervisor.
Beyond the hits, Richard's career was marked by significant personal hurdles. In the 1970s, he struggled with a Quaalude dependency that began as a remedy for insomnia. In 1979, he joined a treatment programme lasting six weeks at the Menninger Clinic. Following Karen's death in 1983, Richard continued to honor her legacy, producing solo works and overseeing the remastering of the duo's extensive catalog.
