The siblings who turned a failed composition into a global phenomenon
In short: Before they were icons, the Carpenters were just two siblings with a contract and a chance to redefine pop. They took a song that had already flopped on television and transformed it into a chart-topping masterpiece, launching a career that would eventually move over 100 million records.
The Carpenters' ascent began in the late 1960s when siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter signed with A&M Records. Their debut album, originally titled Offering but renamed Ticket to Ride, arrived in October 1969. The duo quickly found their footing by reimagining a Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition. While television star Richard Chamberlain had recorded "(They Long to Be) Close to You" in 1963 without commercial success, the Carpenters' version became a defining hit of the early 1970s.
Their commercial dominance was staggering. By the first half of the 1970s, they were scoring major hits across multiple markets. In the United States, they secured one number one album and four top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, alongside three number one singles and twelve top 10 singles on the Hot 100. Their reach was equally impressive in Japan, where they became the third-best-selling international music act, trailing only Mariah Carey and The Beatles.
The duo's discography is a complex web of regional variations and strategic releases. For instance, "I Won't Last a Day Without You" saw its A-side and B-side swapped in the UK shortly after its 1972 release. Similarly, their holiday music has seen unique life cycles; while many Christmas hits see annual spikes due to radio format changes, specific Carpenters recordings have been officially recognized on Billboard's Holiday 100 chart since 2013. By 2005, their collective sales were reported to exceed 100 million copies worldwide.
