In short: Heralded as a future world number one at age 15, Richard Gasquet carried the weight of French tennis expectations from childhood. Known for his elegant one-handed backhand, his journey from a local tennis club to the global stage is a study in early fame, immense talent, and unexpected professional turbulence.

Born in Béziers in 1986, Richard Gasquet was introduced to tennis at age four by his parents, both biology teachers who managed a club in Sérignan. His precocious talent was identified early by Pierre Barthès, and by age nine, he was already featured on the cover of French Tennis Magazine as a future champion. By 2002, he had become the youngest player to win a top-tier ATP main draw match at 15 years and 10 months, and he finished that year as the youngest player to ever rank in the ATP top 200.

Gasquet’s professional trajectory was marked by both brilliance and physical setbacks. In 2005, he achieved a career milestone by defeating world No. 1 Roger Federer at the Monte Carlo Masters, becoming the youngest French player to ever beat a top-ranked opponent. His style, defined by his signature backhand, propelled him to a career-high ranking of world No. 7 in 2007. That same year, he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, a feat he would repeat in 2015, alongside a 2013 semifinal appearance at the US Open.

The player’s career also faced unusual challenges, most notably in 2009 when he was provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine. A tribunal later cleared him to return to the sport, accepting his explanation that the substance—found in a quantity described as the size of a grain of salt—entered his system through inadvertent contamination during a night out in Miami. Despite the scrutiny and the pressure of being labeled the Mozart of tennis, Gasquet maintained a long career, securing 16 ATP singles titles and over 600 match wins.
