The record-breaking Brazilian winger who conquered the Portuguese league
In short: Samuel Lino's journey from the futsal courts of São Paulo to becoming the most expensive signing in Flamengo's history is a masterclass in steady progression. By finding his footing in Portugal before moving to Spain's elite, he built a profile that eventually commanded a historic €22 million price tag.
Lino's development began in the distinct environment of futsal, a sport that emphasizes close control and rapid decision-making. This background informed his early years in the São Bernardo FC youth setup starting in 2016. He made his first-team debut in May 2017, but his path to stardom was not immediate. A brief loan to Flamengo in 2017 was cut short, leading him back to São Bernardo where he scored his first senior goal in August 2017.
His move to the Portuguese Primeira Liga with Gil Vicente in 2019 served as a pivotal turning point. While his first season was modest, he secured a contract renewal in 2020 and saw a significant output increase the following year. The 2021–22 season was particularly notable; Lino scored 12 goals, helping Gil Vicente secure a fifth-place finish and a historic qualification for the 2022–23 UEFA Europa Conference League.
After a high-profile move to Atlético Madrid in 2022, Lino spent a season on loan at Valencia. He emerged as a key offensive threat there, finishing as a joint top scorer in La Liga with six goals. His career reached a financial and competitive peak in July 2025 when he returned to Brazil. His €22 million transfer to Flamengo broke the club's all-time transfer record, and he quickly made his impact by scoring the decisive goal in a 1–0 win over Ceará to secure the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title.
Lino's trajectory illustrates the importance of 'stepping stone' leagues. By establishing himself in Portugal before moving to the Spanish and Brazilian giants, he navigated the complexities of different tactical systems, eventually earning his first international cap for Brazil in September 2025.
