The legal battle that broke a footballing dynasty

In short: In 1998, the De Boer twins held the power. After a verbal promise from Ajax was broken by the club's stock market ambitions, a high-stakes legal fight forced one of football's most iconic sibling duos to leave the Netherlands forever.

Ronald de Boer’s career is defined by both unprecedented dominance and a bitter departure from his boyhood club. During his time at Ajax, particularly under manager Louis van Gaal, he achieved legendary status. Between 1993 and 1996, he secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles and reached the pinnacle of club football, winning the 1995 UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup.

However, the stability of the De Boer era collapsed due to a contractual dispute. Following a six-year extension signed at the start of the 1998–99 season, Ronald and his twin brother, Frank, took legal action to void the agreement. The brothers claimed Ajax had verbally promised to release them if a lucrative offer arrived for one of them, provided the other stayed. Ajax, however, had recently floated on the stock market and had pledged to shareholders that they would build a team around both players, making them unwilling to let either go.

The fallout was devastating for the club. The conflict with the hierarchy led to declining results and the eventual sacking of manager Morten Olsen. In January 1999, the twins finally departed for Barcelona for £22 million, reuniting with Van Gaal. While Ronald’s time in Spain was difficult—scoring only one La Liga goal in 33 appearances—he later found success in Scotland with Rangers, winning a domestic treble during the 2002–03 season before retiring in 2008 after a stint in Qatar.
