How a football underdog toppled the world champions in Qatar
In short: In 2022, the Saudi Arabia national team achieved the unthinkable, defeating Argentina 2–1. This upset ended an Argentine unbeaten streak of 36 games and sent shockwaves through the sporting world, proving that even the most established giants are vulnerable to a well-executed underdog strategy.
The Saudi Arabian national team's journey is a study in extreme fluctuations of form. While they are considered one of Asia's most successful sides, having won the AFC Asian Cup three times—in 1984, 1988, and 1996—their history is punctuated by periods of significant struggle. For instance, the 2002 FIFA World Cup saw a devastating performance where the team conceded 12 goals, including eight against Germany, marking one of the most difficult displays by an Asian side in decades.
Despite these low points, the team has maintained a presence on the global stage, qualifying for seven FIFA World Cups since their debut in 1994. Their tactical identity has shifted through various eras, from the 1994 campaign under Jorge Solari, where they reached the round of 16, to more recent periods of rebuilding. The 2022 victory over Argentina, featuring goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari, remains a definitive moment of modern Saudi football, even though they ultimately finished last in their group after subsequent losses to Poland and Mexico.
Looking forward, the nation is poised to become a central pillar of international football. Saudi Arabia is set to host the AFC Asian Cup in 2027, marking the first time the country will host a major international tournament. This will serve as a precursor to the 2034 FIFA World Cup, signaling a massive expansion of their role in the global footballing landscape.
