The Saudi First Division League is much older than historians once believed
In short: For decades, football historians believed the Saudi First Division League began in 1976. However, a recent massive documentation project has rewritten the timeline, revealing a legacy that stretches back nearly two decades further than previously recorded, uncovering organized competitions that actually date back to the late 1950s.
The history of Saudi football was long obscured by sporadic records and poor archiving. For years, the consensus was that the First Division League (Flipping between names like the Yelo League due to sponsorship) was established in 1976. However, a significant historical documentation project conducted by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) between 2023 and 2025 has fundamentally changed this narrative.
Research into initial competitive frameworks by the SAFF project revealed traces of structured lower-division football from the late 1950s. In 2025, the league was officially recognized as having been founded in 1957. This discovery is significant because it aligns the league's origins with the early development era of the Saudi Pro League, providing a more cohesive history for the nation's footballing hierarchy.
Today, the league operates as the professional second tier of the Saudi football system, sitting between the Saudi Pro League and the Second Division League. The competition features 18 clubs competing in a double round-robin format, where each team plays 34 games per season. The stakes are high: the top two teams earn direct promotion, while a play-off system determines a third promoted side from teams finishing between third and sixth.
The league's regulations have also seen recent shifts. While the 2017–18 season marked the first time foreign goalkeepers were permitted, new restrictions for the 2025–26 season mandate that the goalkeeper position must be held exclusively by Saudi players. This succeeds a 2017 to 2021 era where the competition bore the name of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
