How a rejected prospect became a Celtic legend and a Scottish icon
In short: In his youth, Rangers dismissed Scott Brown for being too small to make the grade. Decades later, he would become the most decorated player in Celtic's history, captaining the club through a dominant era and setting records that defined a generation of Scottish football.
Scott Brown's journey from a rejected youth prospect to a professional icon began in earnest when he joined Hibernian at age 13. After breaking into the Hibs first team in 2002, he became a key part of a 'Golden Generation' of talent. His performances earned him the SFWA Young Player of the Year award and a 2006–07 Scottish League Cup trophy. In May 2007, he made a landmark move to Celtic for £4.4 million, a fee that remains the highest ever paid between two Scottish clubs.
At Celtic, Brown's influence was transformative. Over a fourteen-year tenure, he served as captain for eleven years, leading the club to nine consecutive league championships and successive trebles between 2016–17 and 2019–20. His individual accolades were equally significant, including two PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year awards and the 2017–18 Scottish Footballer of the Year title. He also holds the distinction of making more European appearances for Celtic than any other player in the club's history.
Beyond the pitch, Brown's career has been marked by resilience against injury and the complexities of professional transitions. Despite facing broken legs and persistent ankle issues that required surgeries in Rotterdam, he remained a mainstay for both club and country, earning 50 caps for Scotland. Since retiring as a player in 2022, he has transitioned into management, previously leading Fleetwood Town and currently serving as the head coach of Ayr United.
