The Toronto arena that began as a wartime postal delivery hub
In short: Before it hosted NBA stars and NHL legends, this downtown landmark served a much more practical purpose. Built to stimulate the Great Depression-era economy, the structure was once a vital artery for Canada’s mail, surviving world wars and ownership shifts to become a global sports icon.
The site of Scotiabank Arena has a storied architectural lineage. Originally commissioned in 1937 to replace an overburdened facility at Union Station, the building was designed by Charles B. Dolphin in an Art Deco and Art Moderne style. Construction began in 1938, funded in part to boost the construction industry during the Great Depression. While it was intended as the Toronto Postal Delivery Building, the onset of World War II saw the structure temporarily utilized by the Department of National Defence for wartime storage.
By 1946, the building officially transitioned to Canada Post, serving as the primary mail terminal for Metropolitan Toronto. The facility was a marvel of logistics, featuring gravity-fed mail chutes and conveyor belts that moved sorted mail from the top floor back to the ground floor for distribution. It functioned in this capacity until 1989, when operations moved to a more modern facility on Eastern Avenue.
The transformation into a sports arena was a complex saga of real estate and expansion. Following a period of financial instability that saw the building revert to Canada Post ownership in 1993, the Toronto Raptors' ownership group purchased the site in 1994. During construction, which began in 1997, the project underwent significant changes. Originally designed for basketball, the budget increased from $217 million to $265 million to incorporate the capabilities required for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The finished arena finally opened its doors in February 1999, preserving the original limestone facade as a tribute to its postal heritage.
