In short: From a national championship quarterback to a coach facing a historic losing streak, Scott Frost’s journey is a study in the volatility of football. He achieved undefeated perfection at UCF, only to struggle through a period of unprecedented difficulty at his alma mater, Nebraska.

Scott Frost’s career is defined by extreme peaks and valleys. As a player, he led the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a national championship in 1997, becoming one of the few players in college football history to record both 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards passing in a single season. His coaching ascent followed a similar trajectory of rapid success, notably as the offensive coordinator for Oregon, where he helped lead the 2014 team to the first College Football Playoff.

His tenure at the University of Central Florida (UCF) provided his greatest coaching triumph. After a 6–7 start in 2016, Frost led the 2017 Knights to a perfect 13–0 record, winning the American Athletic Conference and defeating Auburn in the Peach Bowl. While the school claimed a national title, the NCAA only recognized the team as a 'Final National Polls Leader,' as they did not participate in the College Football Playoff.

However, his return to Nebraska as head coach in 2017 brought significant hardship. His tenure was marked by a 16–31 overall record, including a 0–14 record against ranked opponents and a 10–26 record in Big Ten play. The 2021 season was particularly difficult, setting a college football record with nine single-digit losses. Following an upset loss to Georgia Southern in September 2022, Frost was fired, making him the first Nebraska coach since the late 1950s not to achieve a winning season.

In a surprising turn of events, Frost was re-hired by UCF in December 2024 to lead the program through the 2029 season, following the resignation of Gus Malzahn.
