In short: In 1648, Semyon Dezhnev sailed from the Kolyma River to the Anadyr, becoming the first European to navigate the Bering Strait. Despite this monumental feat, his discovery remained buried in local archives for nearly a century, leaving Vitus Bering to receive the credit for the passage that now bears his name.

Born around 1605, Semyon Dezhnev was a Pomor Russian who entered Siberian service in 1630. By 1648, he was an experienced frontiersman and government official tasked with collecting fur tribute. He joined an expedition led by Fedot Alekseyev, which departed the Kolyma River with a fleet of traditional koch vessels. The journey was perilous; of the seven ships that set out, most were lost to storms or ice, and Dezhnev’s own vessel was eventually wrecked south of the Anadyr River.

After surviving the wreck, Dezhnev and his remaining men trekked for ten weeks through unknown territory before reaching the mouth of the Anadyr. They eventually established a winter camp and continued to collect tribute, with Dezhnev later accumulating over two tons of valuable walrus ivory. While he successfully rounded the eastern extremity of Asia—now Cape Dezhnev—his reports were filed in Yakutsk and largely ignored because the sea route offered little commercial advantage over established land paths.

The historical record of Dezhnev’s voyage was only brought to international attention in 1758, when historian Gerhardt Friedrich Müller published the explorer's original reports. While some skeptics have historically questioned the documentation or the feasibility of the route, modern scholars generally accept the account as accurate. Today, Dezhnev is recognized not only for his navigational resourcefulness but also for his role in proving the geographical separation between Asia and North America long before the scientific community officially acknowledged it.
