In short: In 193 CE, the Roman world shifted. The rise of the Severan dynasty saw the Senate’s traditional authority erode as power migrated toward the legions. Driven by military might and influential women, this era redefined imperial rule, setting the stage for a century of profound instability.

The dynasty began with Septimius Severus, an emperor from North Africa who emerged victorious from the civil wars of 193–197 CE. To secure his position, Severus fundamentally restructured the Roman state to favor the military. He increased soldiers' pay and granted them the right to marry, effectively tethering the empire's stability to the loyalty of the army. This shift toward absolute rule came at a cost to the traditional Italian aristocracy and the Senate, whose influence diminished as Severus elevated individuals from provincial and equestrian backgrounds.

Behind the scenes, the dynasty was steered by powerful women. Julia Domna, the wife of Septimius, held a prominent political role, and her sisters, Julia Maesa and Julia Domna, were instrumental in securing the throne for their male relatives. These women, known as powerful augustae, helped navigate the complex transition of power through the reigns of Caracalla, Geta, and later, the grandnephews Elagabalus and Severus Alexander.

However, the era was marked by deep internal fractures. The relationship between the co-emperors Caracalla and Geta was defined by intense hostility, eventually leading to Geta's assassination in 211 CE. While the dynasty saw periods of expansion and the rebuilding of Hadrian's Wall, it also faced economic strain; for instance, the silver purity of the denarius was reduced from 81.5% to 78.5% upon Severus's accession. The dynasty finally collapsed in 235 CE with the death of Severus Alexander, leaving the empire vulnerable to the rising Sasanian dynasty and the chaos of military anarchy.
