In short: In 2014, the Sierra Leone national team faced a crisis far more dangerous than any opponent on the pitch. As the Ebola virus epidemic spread, the football association made the drastic decision to cancel all matches, fundamentally altering the team's operations and the safety of its players.

The Sierra Leone national football team, governed by the Sierra Leone Football Association, has a history marked by both sporting milestones and profound external challenges. The team has successfully qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations on three separate occasions. Their competitive journey began on 10 August 1949, when they played their first match at home against Nigeria, a fellow British colony, resulting in a 2–0 defeat.

The team's early history involved several matches against other British colonies and territories. In 1954, they traveled to face the Gold Coast and Trans-Volta Togoland, losing 2–0. They also faced Liberia in 1966, securing their first draw in a 1–1 result. Their international reach expanded in 1974 when they traveled to China for their first match outside of Africa, where they lost 4–1.

A defining moment for the squad occurred in August 2014, when the Sierra Leone FA cancelled all association football matches to combat the spread of the Ebola virus epidemic. This move followed a similar decision by the Liberian FA just one week prior. The epidemic created significant tension during international play; Sierra Leonean players based abroad, such as Michael Lahoud in the United States, faced discrimination. Opposing players sometimes refused to shake hands, swap shirts, or allow them access to certain stadium areas due to fears of disease transmission. Consequently, the national team was barred from playing home games, requiring all players to be based outside the country.

Aiming for future continental glory, the squad will face Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September 2026.
