A nation suspended its own football team after a tournament exit
In short: In a move rarely seen in international sports, the Gabonese government took the extraordinary step of suspending its national football team. Following a disappointing run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the state intervened, leading to a sweeping purge of the coaching staff and the nation's most iconic players.
The Gabonese Football Federation has overseen a long and often turbulent history for the national team, known as The Panthers. While they have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, they have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations nine times as of 2025. The team's journey began in 1960 during the Friendship Games, a tournament for French-speaking African countries. Early years were marked by inconsistency, including a 6–0 thrashing by Cameroon in 1961 and various periods of inactivity that lasted over two years at a time.
The team's modern era has been defined by high-profile figures and dramatic moments. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became a central figure, notably scoring a hat-trick in a 4–1 victory over Niger in 2013 and scoring three goals during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
That year, Gabon co-hosted the tournament and achieved a dramatic quarter-final berth, scoring a winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time against Morocco before losing on penalties to Mali. However, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations served as a breaking point. After losing all three matches in the tournament, the Gabonese government intervened. Sports Minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula took the unprecedented step of suspending the national team. This administrative crackdown included the sacking of head coach Thierry Mouyouma and the immediate banning of both the team captain, Bruno Ecuele Manga, and the nation's all-time top scorer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. This move underscores the intense pressure and political weight placed on national football in the region.
