The game that was born from a failed port and a revolution
In short: When a planned port of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Wii fell through, Sega didn't just pivot; they reimagined the franchise. They traded traditional platforming for an on-rails odyssey through the Arabian Nights, blending Middle Eastern mythology with a revolutionary new control scheme.
Developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007) was the result of a strategic shift. Sega originally intended to port the 2006 title to the Wii but faced lengthy development hurdles. Producer Yojiro Ogawa seized the opportunity to create a title specifically designed for the Wii Remote's capabilities. This led to a departure from standard movement, opting for an on-rails style where players tilt the controller to navigate forward while using face buttons to jump and brake.
The game's aesthetic was a deliberate move to 'get back to basics.' Influenced by titles like Shadow of the Colossus and Prince of Persia, it featured hand-painted, static imagery and a Middle Eastern-inspired atmosphere. The narrative placed Sonic in the world of the Arabian Nights to stop Erazor Djinn, a villain seeking to erase the book. This setting allowed for unique character crossovers, where familiar faces like Tails and Knuckles appeared as figures from Middle Eastern fables, though they did not recognize Sonic.
Despite its unique vision, the game received mixed reviews. Critics praised its visual style but were divided on its inconsistent difficulty and controls. However, it was a commercial success, selling over 1.2 million copies by 2008 and earning a 'Platinum' sales award in the UK. Its legacy is tied to the 'Sonic Storybook' series, though Sega eventually de-listed the title in 2010 to protect the brand's value from sub-average Metacritic scores.
